Lake Point Tower, a well-recognized architectural gem on the Chicago lakefront, turns 40 this fall.  Anniversary activities culminate on Wednesday, October 28 with a symposium, “Lake Point Tower: Back Story of an Icon.” The free public event will be held 12:15 – 1:00 p.m. at the Chicago Architecture Foundation Lecture Hall Gallery, 224 South Michigan Avenue.

In conjunction with the anniversary, the Chicago Architecture Foundation has published the book Lake Point Tower: A Design History, by architect Edward Windhorst and architectural historian Kevin Harrington. Symposium speakers on October 28th include the authors and Lake Point Tower architect George Schipporeit, now 76. A book signing will follow.

Lake Point Tower has just finished a major renovation of its doorman’s lobby, reception areas and elevator lobby.  The photo above is from one of the reception areas, looking out into the building’s rotunda.

The waterfalls in both reception areas were redone completely, and again the restful sounds of falling waters greet those who enter the building.

The celebration of Lake Point Tower’s 40th anniversary on October 3, 2009, was a huge success by any measure.  There was a standing room only crowd far in excess of 300 people.  Owners and their guests got to hear Bill Hartnett tell about how he developed the building, George Schipporeit about how he and partner John Heinrich designed the building and a whole series of speakers say what was so special about Alfred Caldwell, landscape architect and designer of the building’s Skyline Park.  Speakers were followed by a panel discussion featuring Hartnett and Schipporeit being interview by Edward Windhorst. Everyone then attended a wine reception and had their free copy of Lake Point Tower: A Design History signed by authors Edward Windhorst and Kevin Harrington. Read the rest of this entry »
