How Lake Point Tower Got Its Name

At the project stage, Lake Point Tower was not called Lake Point Tower.

Early documents identify the project as “Shoreline Apartments,” according to Ed Windhorst and Kevin Harrington’s forthcoming book, Lake Point Tower: A Design History.

It was the architect George Schipporeit’s wife Sharon who came up with the name “Lake Point Tower.”  She was probably unaware of the highly appropriate architectural pun. A point tower” is, according to Windhorst and Harrington,   “…a tall building symmetrical in plan about a point. ”

That exactly describes Lake Point Tower — a central, concrete core for elevators and stairwells with three extending wings all rising to 70 floors.

When Lake Point Tower next comes up in conversation, you’ll be able to contribute this historical fact.
