Lake Point Tower in the Chicago Model City Display
Lake Point Tower, a well-recognized architectural gem on the Chicago lakefront, turns 40 this fall. Anniversary activities culminate on Wednesday, October 28 with a symposium, “Lake Point Tower: Back Story of an Icon.” The free public event will be held 12:15 – 1:00 p.m. at the Chicago Architecture Foundation Lecture Hall Gallery, 224 South Michigan Avenue.
In conjunction with the anniversary, the Chicago Architecture Foundation has published the book Lake Point Tower: A Design History, by architect Edward Windhorst and architectural historian Kevin Harrington. Symposium speakers on October 28th include the authors and Lake Point Tower architect George Schipporeit, now 76. A book signing will follow.

Hi Guys – John in New Orleans here – Happy 40th Anniversary Lake Point Tower! Back in 1975 and 1976, my Dad and I – and another friend of mine spent time in a wonderful LPT apartment on the 49th floor. I remember that we had a spectacular view from south of the Loop up to Wilmette, before so many other buildings crowded the views. Chicago was my “first” truly big city and what a perfect intoduction to it! Especially for someone as into architecture as I am. I recall that the first year we were there, Water Tower Place was still under construction and on our next visit it was finished. Now I suppose it would be hidden behind so many other new buildings. In addition to the dazzling views, I particularly remember how beautiful Lake Point Tower is at dusk, as the setting sun catches first one row of windows and then another, until the whole building glows like a jewel. I’m moving up to Cincinnati in a couple of months – no hurricanes + family and friends there – and look forward to being close enough to get to know Chicago all over again. Since the 70’s I’ve been many places and seen many wonderful buildings, but only very, very rarely have I seen a skyscraper with the unique situation, the amazing views and the architectural beauty of Lake Point Tower.
